The Oregon State Board of Higher Education approved a new policy that prohibits the possession of firearms on any University-owned or
-controlled property by students, employees, contractors or vendors. This also applies to people who are attending ticketed events and renting or leasing University-owned or -controlled property.
The policy, which became effective March 2, also applies to people who have a concealed handgun permit.
There are a few exceptions to the policy, including on-duty law enforcement officers, campus police who are using firearms for training purposes, military program participants and residents of the Spencer View Apartments and East Campuses Houses while inside their homes.
This exception does not apply to any other residents of University housing.
“The intent of the policy is to enhance personal safety on (Oregon University System) campuses and to provide an environment where learning, research and exchange of ideas can thrive,” a press release that was sent to all students, faculty and staff stated.
“The intent of the email is to broadly communicate with students faculty and staff,” University spokesperson Julie Brown@@http://uoregon.edu/findpeople/person/Julie%2ABrown@@ said. “Enforcement will be carried out specific to each audience.”
For students, it  means changes in the Student Conduct Code; for employees it would be through a Human Resources process.
