When it came to performance on the field, Pac-12 football was all over the place in 2011. Yet when it came to the NFL draft this past weekend, even middling teams such as Utah saw players selected. What follows is a roundup of how each school fared in New York:
Arizona
Total number of players picked: 3
Highest pick: Quarterback Nick Foles, third round to the Eagles
Foles was obviously the marquee man of Arizona’s class, and he found himself a place behind Michael Vick when the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the third round. With Vince Young firmly entrenched at the backup spot, Foles will likely take the third slot on the depth chart in the early stages of his career. Standout wide receiver Juron Criner was selected in the fifth round by the Oakland Raiders, while cornerback Trevin Wade had to wait until the seventh round to hear his name called by the Cleveland Browns. @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-round/dt-by-round-input:3@@ @@http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/roster.html@@ @@http://www.nfl.com/player/vinceyoung/2506875/profile@@ @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-round/dt-by-round-input:5/dt-by-name-input:y@@ @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-round/dt-by-round-input:7/dt-by-name-input:y@@
Arizona State
Total number of players picked: 2
Highest pick: Brock Osweiler, second round to the Broncos
Interestingly, the only two players to be selected from Arizona State both went to Denver. Osweiler, a towering quarterback who blossomed last season as a starter, will likely battle for the backup spot behind some guy named Peyton Manning. In all, a pretty good situation for him to come into. The Broncos also selected Sun Devil cornerback Omar Bolden in the fourth round, while the infamously combustible yet talented linebacker Vontaze Burfict went undrafted. @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-round/dt-by-round-input:2/dt-by-name-input:y@@ @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-round/dt-by-round-input:4/dt-by-name-input:y@@ @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-name/dt-by-round-input:4/dt-by-name-input:b@@
California
Total number of players picked: 6
Highest pick: Mitchell Schwartz, second round to the Cleveland Browns
This year, Cal head coach Jeff Tedford continued his odd trend of getting a slew of players drafted despite a mediocre product on the field. He’s like a Bizzaro version of John Calipari. Offensive tackle Schwartz was the top pick from Cal, but linebacker Mychal Kendricks followed shortly behind in the second round to the Eagles. Punter Bryan Anger made some headlines going in the third round because, well, he’s a punter. Among the other picks were wideout Marvin Jones (fifth round to the Cincinnati Bengals), defensive end Trevor Guyton (seventh round to the Minnesota Vikings) and safety D.J. Campbell (seventh round to the Carolina Panthers). @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/tracker#dt-tabs:dt-by-round/dt-by-round-input:2/dt-by-name-input:b@@
Colorado
Total number of players picked: 2
Highest pick: Ryan Miller, fifth round to the Cleveland Browns
Somehow, despite being entirely abysmal in 2011, Colorado managed to swing two draft picks, albeit in the later rounds. Miller was followed by wide receiver Toney Clemons in the seventh round to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Oregon
Total number of players picked: 4
Highest pick: LaMichael James, second round to the San Francisco 49ers
Most speculation heading into the draft fell around James’ status, and the questions were answered on day two when he joined up with former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco. Linebacker Josh Kaddu followed in the fifth round to the Miami Dolphins, while offensive lineman Mark Asper went to the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round and David Paulson was selected in the seventh round by Pittsburgh. Notably, neither quarterback Darron Thomas nor cornerback Cliff Harris was selected, though Harris did sign a free agent contract with the Eagles. @@http://www.49ers.com/team/coaches/jim-harbaugh/0168f05e-4fc6-4b7d-bdff-db27c0224ea7@@ @@http://www.49ers.com/team/coaches/jim-harbaugh/0168f05e-4fc6-4b7d-bdff-db27c0224ea7@@
Oregon State
Total number of players picked: 1
Highest pick: Brandon Hardin, third round to the Chicago Bears
The Beavers had a woeful go at it last season, so it makes sense that they’d only send one player to the professional ranks. Hardin, though, was a high pick in the third round and could see early action with the safety-deprived Bears.
Stanford
Total number of players picked: 4
Highest pick: Andrew Luck, first round to the Indianapolis Colts
Luck was penciled in at No. 1 overall for months, so there were no surprises there. Offensive guard David DeCastro joined Luck in the first round when the Steelers selected him at No. 24 overall, and the Colts attempted to ease Luck’s transition by taking his college tight end Coby Fleener in the second round. Offensive tackle Jonathan Martin, meanwhile, was off the board in the second round when the Miami Dolphins snagged him. Former standout receiver Chris Owusu went undrafted, but was signed by the 49ers as a free agent. @@http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-football/18899878/ers-sign-chris-owusu-as-undrafted-free-agent@@ @@http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-football/18899878/ers-sign-chris-owusu-as-undrafted-free-agent@@
UCLA
Total number of players picked: 0
Highest pick: N/A
Just to add insult to injury after a season that got coach Rick Neuheisel fired, not a single Bruin was drafted this year. A few players did sign contracts as free agents, though, including wideout Nelson Rosario to the Jacksonville Jaguars and running back Derrick Coleman to the Minnesota Vikings. @@http://www.insidesocal.com/ucla/2012/04/ucla-shut-out-in-nfl-draft.html@@ @@http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/post/18907594@@
USC
Total number of players picked: 3
Highest pick: Matt Kalil, first round to the Minnesota Vikings
Kalil was the star of the draft for the Trojans, going No. 4 overall to the Vikings and taking his place as a potential franchise tackle. Defensive end Nick Perry also joined Kalil later in the first round, going No. 28 overall to the Green Bay Packers. Finally, fullback Rhett Ellison earned a spot alongside Kalil in Minnesota when he was selected in the fourth round.
Utah
Total number of players picked: 1
Highest pick: Tony Bergstrom, third round to the Oakland Raiders
Utah barely avoided joining UCLA as the second Pac-12 team to be shut out of the draft. Bergstrom, a 6-foot-5 offensive guard, will be a 26-year old rookie as a result of a Mormon mission he completed while at Utah. @@http://www.nfl.com/draft/2012/profiles/tony-bergstrom?id=2533010@@
Washington
Total number of players selected: 2
Highest pick: Alameda Ta’amu, fourth round to the Pittsburgh Steelers
Perhaps the most interesting part of Washington’s draft class was running back Chris Polk going undrafted. Though he was picked up by the Eagles, many — including LaMichael James — were shocked that he fell so far. Meanwhile, Ta’amu’s selection was closely followed by offensive guard Senio Kelemete being taken in the fifth round by the Arizona Cardinals. @@http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/blog/rob-rang/18883378/chris-polk-signs-with-eagles-denies-injury-rumors@@ @@https://twitter.com/#!/LaMichaelJames/status/196432054588674049@@
