Matthew Knight Arena was built for winter term. The colossus of indoor sports at Oregon houses both the men’s and women’s basketball squads as well as the acrobatics and tumbling program. In its second season of use, the state-of-the-art arena saw its patrons achieve variable success.
In Dana Altman’s second season as head coach, he saw his men’s basketball team gain marked success, finishing the season with a 24-10 overall record (13-5 in Pac-12 play) while making it to the third round of the NIT tournament. Despite not finishing as champion of a postseason tournament the Ducks were greatly improved over Altman’s first season when the team won the CBI final.
For the women hoopsters, Paul Westhead’s team experienced another disappointing losing season, finishing just below .500. The team lost three of its top four scorers to graduation.
The jewel of Oregon’s winter sports turned out to be the high-flyers. The Ducks were crowned national champs at the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association Championship in Waco, Texas, in 2012.
