Just three months ago I had never been involved with the ASUO or even knew much about it. After some research and becoming frustrated with the system, my friend Sam and I decided to run for ASUO Executive. An idea so distant soon became a reality as we won our election. Sam and I aim to increase transparency, end insider corruption and work to make student government relevant to the everyday student. We solicit your help and participation in executing these goals.
The ASUO is one of the most recognized and autonomous student governments in the nation. Next year the ASUO will be responsible for allocating more than $10 million in student incidental fees. Sam and I are currently hiring next year’s ASUO Executive Staff, and we invite all University of Oregon students to apply and get involved.
There is a different position and opportunity for everyone. For instance, the ASUO Finance Coordinator will help us create an executive model to submit to the respective finance committees. It would be a fantastic opportunity to gain experience working with large budgets.
Another significant position includes the ASUO Program Administrator, who will help our administration oversee more than 150 student programs. We are also looking for ASUO State and Federal Affairs Coordinators who will advocate on behalf of entire campus on local and national levels. There are many other positions that are available, many of which include advocacy positions such as the Multicultural Advocate, Diversity Advocate and Graduate/Law Advocate.
I hope you take advantage of these opportunities to get involved and make a difference. We need fresh blood and ideas in the ASUO Executive and it begins with bringing in YOU – the everyday student. Please apply today at the ASUO office – EMU Suite 4 under the breezeway. Or, at the very least, come in and say hello. Go Ducks.
