Former Oregon basketball player Drew Viney officially transferred to Loyola Marymount University, according to several reports.
Viney said last month that he wanted to attend a school closer to his home and family in Orange County, and Loyola Marymount gives him that opportunity. He also told the Emerald he hoped to play club volleyball during the year he sits out for eligibility rules.
The Lions recruited Viney from Villa Park High School, where he averaged 31 points and 12 rebounds as a senior, before committing to California and then finally opting for Oregon.
Loyola Marymount hired head coach Bill Bayno, a former scout and assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, to coach the team for the upcoming season. He’s hoping that Viney will help recharge the program during the 2009-10 season after the Lions compiled a 5-26 record this past year.
“He has been ranked one of the top players coming out of Southern California and it is important that he is coming home and doing so by coming to LMU,” Bayno said in a press release. “He could have played anywhere in the west, but chose to be a Lion. That is an important statement for our program.”
