Oregon was unable to reverse history, losing for the 22nd time at Stanford against the Cardinal, this time in disconcerting fashion.
The Ducks (13-9 overall, 4-6 Pacific-10 Conference) lost 72-43, their lowest point total since losing to Montana 78-39 on Nov. 22, 1991.
“That was the most embarrassing offensive show we’ve had all year,” coach Ernie Kent said to reporters after the game.
Oregon shot 14-of-48 (29.2 percent) from the floor while Stanford went 27-of-55 (49.1 percent). The Cardinal had three starters reach double figures in and were led by center Robin Lopez’s 15 points. Brook Lopez was swarmed at nearly every opportunity in the game and finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
“We got our butts kicked in that ballgame,” Kent said in a broadcast interview. “We gave them the opportunity to pound us and they pounded us.”
Sophomore guard Tajuan Porter led the Ducks with 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. After Porter, no Oregon player scored more than six points.
“This was the worst loss I can remember since freshman year, when Stanford had Chris Hernandez and Matt Haryasz and they killed us,” Malik Hairston said. “This game was shocking to us. They dominated us that much on the glass.”
