The Eugene Police Department has released the names of the officers who on Sunday shot and used a Taser on a man wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred Saturday in West Eugene. EPD also released the name of one of the men who was shot on Saturday. The name of the other man, who was killed in the shooting on Saturday, is still being withheld by police.
Efren Avilalopez, 32, is recovering from gunshot wounds at a local hospital, according to an EPD news release.
Officers arrested Juan Carlos Aleman, 32, whom detectives named the prime suspect of the shooting Saturday night, at a residence in Southeast Eugene on Sunday. Interim Police Chief Pete Kerns said at a press conference Sunday that Aleman failed to comply with police orders, and approached officers with two large knives.
Officer Jeremy Williams fired a sponge-round at Aleman, and officer Marcus Pope shot Aleman with a rifle, according to the release. Kerns said Aleman continued to move toward officers after being shot, and officer John Sharlow used a Taser to take him into custody.
Lane County Sheriff’s Department recovered a white Ford SUV on Sunday night that police believe Aleman was driving the previous night. Police have not searched the vehicle, but searched the house where Aleman was found, according to the release.
