MATCHUP: Jeremiah Masoli vs. Ellis Powers BSU safety, courtesy art
Like Oregon rover Patrick Chung, senior Ellis Powers is a force on Boise State’s defense, ranking third on the team in tackles and tied for first for solo tackles. Unlike Chung, however, this has been the 5-foot-10, 200-pound Powers’ breakout year for the Broncos after 37 tackles last season, mostly coming on special teams, where he was named special teams player of the year. Powers could have a major impact on Saturday against sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who will split time with Chris Harper due to Justin Roper’s knee injury against Purdue. Roper will be out for two to four weeks, which means the Ducks will likely emphasize the running game even more with a largely unproven quarterback. Against Washington, Masoli showed he can win, but his progress in the next month could be a gauge of how the Ducks’ season will go.
