The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will host a lecture tonight that delves into the meaning of two recently acquired works featured in its new exhibit, “Buddhist Visions.”
Charles Lachman, the museum’s curator of Asian art, will present “How Zen Paintings Mean: Two Portraits of Bodhidharma.” He will discuss the iconography and inscriptions of two paintings of Bodhidharma, the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism, or Zen Buddhism.
“(Chan Buddhism) is one of the most important forms of Buddhism in East Asia, especially in Japan and Korea,” Lachman said. “Bodhidharma is considered the founder of Chan Buddhism, the teachings of which he is credited with having brought to China from India in the early 16th century.”
The exhibition, which opened Saturday, features more than 80 works of art that illustrate the rich culture of Buddhism.
The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. at the museum.
