SALT LAKE CITY — After closing its Pacific-10 Conference season with four wins, the Oregon women’s basketball team hoped for an NCAA Tournament appearance for its eighth straight season.
It did.
Then, after earning a 13th seed in the Midwest Region — a bracket in which the highest seed of a possible Oregon opponent in the first two rounds was fourth-seeded Iowa — the Ducks hoped to overshadow their rough season with a trip to the Sweet 16.
They didn’t.
Oregon’s season came to an end with its 89-82 overtime loss against Iowa in front of 3,119 fans, including about 1,000 Eugene faithful, at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“It’s a tough way for the seniors to end everything,” Oregon head coach Jody Runge said. “I’m just glad they got to go to the Tournament. They did everything I asked them to do.”
The Ducks trailed by 15 points midway through the second half, but stormed back and tied the game with a 15-4 run through the next seven minutes that helped send the game into overtime.
Iowa scored the first six points of the extra period and never looked back.
