In only the first week of spring practice the Oregon football team received some bad news Tuesday: fullback Adam Kennybrew’s career is finished.
Despite having two more years of eligibility remaining, Kennybrew listened to doctor’s orders and stepped out due to a foot injury, according to head coach Mike Bellotti.
The soon-to-be junior from Beverly Hills, Calif., has a broken navicular bone in his right foot that is presumed to have been broken even before he arrived in Eugene in the fall of 1998.
Kennybrew never had a chance to fully blossom as a Duck, but showed plenty of promise as a special teams player and a backup fullback to Josh Line. On special teams, the 6-0, 231-pounder had totaled 10 tackles in 21 games, while on offense he had rushed for 14 yards on five carries, including a touchdown.
The former high school quarterback’s lone collegiate score came in the fourth quarter of Oregon’s season-opening 36-7 victory over Nevada on Sept. 2 at Autzen Stadium.
The team physicians believe that his broken foot will never be 100 percent. There is a bright side for Kennybrew though. Because he is leaving the football program for a medical reason, the education major will continue to receive athletic financial aid until his graduation.
Also on Tuesday, Bellotti announced that freshman defensive end/tight end Dee White has left the Ducks due to personal reasons. White, who hails from Thornton, Colo., was a redshirt last fall.
