While chasing around a little white ball isn’t fun for everyone, it’s spring, the sun is shining and the area golf courses are filling up.
Many local courses offer discounts for students, so head out and play some golf. Tee times are recommended at all courses.
Laurelwood Golf Course
Laurelwood Golf Course, 2700 Columbia St., is located close to the University and provides students with the affordable option of golfing before or after classes.
“[Laurelwood’s] probably the most challenging public course in Eugene,” said Lane Community College student Dustin Hood after finishing a morning round Thursday.
For some, the price is more important than the course design.
“It’s the best I know of in Eugene — for this price,” said Hood’s playing partner, John Malmberg, also a student at LCC.
A challenging and hilly nine-hole course with a par of 70, Laurelwood is one of the only places in Eugene, besides the Eugene Country Club, that allows you to rear back and fire with your driver. The course also has a driving range.
Monday through Thursday, students pay only $8 for nine holes or $14 to play 18 holes. On weekends, prices increase to $10 and $16, respectively.
Oakway Golf Course
Another course located in Eugene is Oakway Golf Course, 2000 Cal Young Road.
“One of the best things about this course is location, location, location,” said Oakway head pro Tom DeCuman. “We’re centrally located to all of Eugene.”
An 18-hole course with a par 61, Oakway is located off Coburg Road just north of the Ferry Street Bridge. Lined with trees, the course snakes its way through neighborhoods with attractive, modern houses, and can be played in a relatively short amount of time.
Pro shop worker Dean Bartel said the course is in the best shape he’s seen it in years, and it can be completed in about three hours.
Since the weather has been nice, Oakway has seen an increase in golfers.
“Just give us sunshine — that’ll bring ’em out,” Bartel said.
Monday through Thursday, students pay $10 for nine holes or $16 to play 18 holes.
Oakway Bar and Grill, also located on the premises, offers a menu that includes breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, salads, beer and wine.
Middlefield Golf Course
For those willing to drive a short distance, there’s Middlefield Golf Course in Cottage Grove at 91 Village Drive. DeCuman said that a four-hour round is rare for the course, which is a par 67. DeCuman said the best thing about the course is its design. The course is flat, which makes for an easy walk, and the greens offer large landing zones.
Monday through Thursday, the student price is $10 for nine holes or $16 to play 18 holes.
McKenzie River Golf Course
Located about 30 minutes east of Eugene, McKenzie River Golf Course at 41723 Madrone St. offers a unique experience. The course is lined by a creek on one side and the McKenzie River on the other.
“It’s just like a walk in the park,” said pro shop worker Gene Hyne about the course. The nine-hole, par-35 course offers split tees to give the holes a different look when playing through twice.
Monday through Thursday, students pay $15 for nine holes or $23 to play 18 holes. Weekend prices are $16 and $25, respectively.
Tokatee Golf Course
Rated by Golf Digest as one of the top 25 public courses in America, Tokatee Golf Course at 54947 McKenzie Highway offers spectacular views of the Three Sisters mountains and a relaxed environment. Located 47 miles east of Eugene, Tokatee is a full-length par-72 course. The course is relatively flat and has wide-open fairways.
“It’s the scenery that makes it beautiful,” said pro shop worker Ben Hamel, “and no houses on the course make it private.”
Monday through Thursday, students pay $12 for nine holes or $20 to play 18 holes.
