An open letter to new and returning University students:
On behalf of the citizens of Eugene, welcome to the University and to our community. This new academic year brings the promise of new friendships, new challenges and the wonderful possibilities that come with learning and scholarship.
I hope you will consider getting involved in one or more of the many civic issues that affect both the University and community at-large. Your unique perspective as a student and, perhaps, as one who has lived in another community, would be invaluable to our efforts to bring about positive changes. There are many community programs, projects and activities that would greatly benefit from your involvement.
Do you have a few hours to spare? Consider volunteering some time with a reading readiness program and help young children and their families get a head start on learning. Or, put your energy and education to good use as a mentor. You can fuel the imaginations and dreams of others by sharing your expertise and interests.
Of course, we also want you to have some fun. I hope you will have the opportunity to explore some of our unique cultural, commercial, and recreational resources. As you may already be aware, Eugene and the surrounding area is home to miles of developed and undeveloped walking, running, hiking and bicycling trails and we are conveniently situated between the majestic Cascade Mountain range and the Oregon coast. Eugene is also home to many wonderful indoor activities, such as world-class and grass roots cultural events, top-notch eateries and shopping to suit any taste.
The academic and administrative staff at the University, your student leaders and your neighbors here in Eugene have been working tirelessly to ensure that your experience here will be a positive and productive one. I wish you all the best this year — in school and in life.
Oh, and Go Ducks!
