Two left-turn lanes used by westbound traffic to enter the University from Franklin Boulevard are closing permanently as part of preparations for Lane Transit District’s new bus rapid transit system.
The westbound left-turn lane onto Onyx Street from Franklin Boulevard closed on Tuesday. To turn left onto Onyx Street, westbound vehicles now have to turn right and drive into the University Physical Plant, make a turn around the island, and then cross Franklin Boulevard at the signal. LTD spokeswoman Sue Viggiano said once construction is completed permanent signs indicating the required right turn will be installed.
The left-turn lane from Franklin Boulevard onto Agate Street will also close in a month, said Viggiano. She said the new major westbound entrance into the University will be at Moss Street.
The changes in roads are intended to accommodate LTD’s upcoming EmX bus transit system, which will connect downtown Eugene with downtown Springfield and will have several stops along Franklin Boulevard. Viggiano said the left-turn lanes will be converted into lanes for through traffic. She said the changes are expected to make movement along Franklin Boulevard safer and easier.
She said future plans for construction along Franklin Boulevard include installing a traffic signal at Moss Street and finishing EmX stations on Franklin Boulevard at Walnut Street, Agate Street and East 11th Avenue.
