The Student Senate will revisit the controversial resolution against Iran’s nuclear program at tonight’s weekly meeting, which begins at 7 p.m.
Co-author of the resolution and Jewish Student Union President Jonathan Rosenberg brought the issue to Senate Ombudsman and ASUO President-elect Jared Axelrod’s attention last term. Rosenberg asked him to sponsor the resolution and allow the Student Senate to take a stance against Iran’s nuclear program and help lobby national leaders, including members of U.S. Congress.
The authors of the original resolution cited seven news reports and several government documents to show that Iran poses a threat to the West.
The Senate changed a portion of its rules on the first day of March to allow it to pass resolutions on issues not directly related to distributing the student-paid incidental fee.
Rosenberg was elected to next year’s Student Senate after running unopposed for the Architecture & Allied Arts seat.
Tonight in the third-floor EMU Board Room senators will debate whether the Iran issue “is in the direct interest of the overwhelming majority” of the student body. The resolution is the last item on the agenda. Meetings usually last about two hours.
