Proponents of intelligent design, a controversial concept that states the complexity of the universe indicates it was created by intelligent direction rather than undirected evolution, will present their case Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the EMU Fir Room.
The University Christian Fellowship will sponsor Geoffrey Simmons, author of “What Darwin Didn’t Know,” to offer scientific examples of intelligent design, according to a press release. Simmons “will present the case for intelligent design as a legitimate scientific model for understanding biological development on macro and micro levels,” the press release states.
Richard Beswick, director of the UCF, will moderate the presentation. Beswick said local attorney Tom Alderman will talk about the “philosophical nature of science, what it is and who defines it.”
Emeritus University chemistry professor Jim Long will field questions after the presentation, Beswick said.
The UCF will present the case as part of the “Mars Hill” forum, which Beswick says the UCF has sponsored for the past 28 years. The forum examines controversial issues and has hosted debates on intelligent design in the past, Beswick said. The forum is named for an instance in the Bible when the Apostle Paul addressed a group of non-Christians on Mars Hill in classical Athens.
