I came to the University last fall through the National Student Exchange program, which allowed me to study Journalism here for one year. Now that my time in Eugene has come to an end, I find myself looking back on the many things I’ve experienced.
Among those things, some of the most memorable are the events that I photographed for the Emerald. Being a staff photographer allowed me to see and do many things that I normally would have never done on my own.
From photographing organized protests and rallies to approaching random Eugeneans by the Willamette River, each experience shaped my photographic and journalistic skills in a unique way. Events like the Oregon Country Fair and
Relay for Life taught me to converse with people so that I could then use my camera to tell their stories. A story on intelligent design gave my the chance to create my first photo illustration, which taught me how hard it can be to turn an idea into a photograph. Above all, the help and inspiration that I’ve gotten from everyone at the Emerald will be the most valuable memories I’ll take back to Minnesota with me. I will truly miss all of my coworkers – no – friends at the Emerald and I wish them all luck in the future.
