This weekend the University will host this year’s Beyond Patriarchy conference. Sponsored by several student groups as well as the ASUO Senate, the free three-day event will feature lectures and discussions on issues surrounding feminism and activism, as well as workshops on topics ranging from basic first-aid for protests to an herbal haircare how-to. The conference is also providing food catered by Govinda’s Vegetarian Buffet, and entertainment for attendees will include firedancing and a concert-party at the Campbell Club.
Check-in begins 11 a.m. on Friday and the event will run until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Activist and author Andrea Smith will deliver the keynote speech “Another Politics is Possible” on Friday at 7 p.m. at PLC 180.
“She really takes an intersectional approach to gender and violence,” said one of the event’s organizers, Ariel Howland, also a co-director at the Survival Center. “Gender oppression is linked to violent oppression, it’s all connected.”
According to organizer Tara Burke, Beyond Patriarchy has convened about 2 times before.
“We still live in a place where people are unequal, whether people realize it or not,” Burke said.
