The Oregon men’s golf team completed the 2009 Pacific-10 Conference Championship tournament yesterday afternoon at the par-72, 6,836-yard Seattle Golf Course. The Ducks finished the tournament in second place, their best finish since 1997, behind the tournament champion No. 6 Washington Huskies.
The young Oregon squad, four freshmen and two sophomores, finished the tournament with a four-round team score of 1,442.
Freshman Daniel Miernicki led the way in the final round for the Ducks, shooting a 2-under 70, while fellow freshman Robbie Ziegler recorded his best score of the tournament with a 1-under 71 for the day.
Individually, Washington’s duo of Darren Wallace and Nick Taylor finished first and second, respectively, while Miernicki ended the tournament in a tie for third place with UCLA’s Erik Flores.
Freshman Eugene Wong and sophomore Isaiah Telles each finished the tournament in the top-10 overall with a score of 288, which put them in a tie for ninth place overall. Ziegler finished the tournament in 16th as Oregon’s fourth-leading scorer.
Sophomore Jack Dukeminier had a fairly quiet tournament overall, with his best score coming in the third round as he shot a 2-under 70. Dukeminier finished in a tie for 36th overall.
Andrew Vijarro, also a freshman, concluded his first Pac-10 tournament appearance in a tie for 49th place.
Oregon really secured its position on the leader board during the third round of play, as five out of their six scorers were two strokes under par.
Oregon will now await its fate in the NCAA Regional selection. Regional play is set for May 14-16.
