University student Mariah Thompson and several other members of Step Up, Oregon! delivered a giant mock contract and a pair of cardboard scissors to the steps of the Johnson Hall administrative building Thursday. The action protested President Dave Frohnmayer’s May 26 decision to retain the University’s contract with Russell Athletic, a corporation that has recently become embroiled in controversy regarding its treatment of workers in a Honduran factory. Frohnmayer defended his decision in a letter to Step Up, Oregon!, stating that ending the University’s agreement with Russell would be a violation of the Oregon University System’s business practices policy as the illegality of the company’s actions remain in dispute.
