The ASUO Constitution Court announced its decision yesterday evening on a motion of clarification filed by both ASUO President Emma Kallaway and Sen. Lyzi Diamond, asking whether Xavier Aranda could justly serve Senate Seat 14.
The court decided that Aranda was eligible for the seat by publishing an advisory opinion.
“There is nothing inherent in sharing identities among many possible disciplines which precludes a student from fulfilling that purpose,” the opinion states.
Kallaway said she was excited to hear the news.
“I’m happy about the opportunity; the Senate can go ahead and deny or approve Sen. Aranda to Senate Seat 14,” she said.
Because Aranda is on National Student Exchange, he is technically also eligible for Seat 19.
“I’m really excited to watch him work and work for students,” Kallaway said. “He has been acknowledged for his work and we are lucky to have a very different type of voice on Senate.”
