As a salaried employee, hours will vary, but the Scene editor must be able to work an average of 30 hours per week. The Scene editor coordinates three reporters in covering the entertainment news pertinent to their assigned beats. The Scene editor will be responsible for a biweekly Scene section and will be specifically expected to:
- Work with Scene reporters to generate story ideas
- Attend Scene desk story meetings each week and help determine which stories will be assigned to freelancers
- Line edit stories prior to publication to identify problems, such as libel, inaccuracy, wordiness or lack of clarity
- Assist reporters in writing and improving their work
- Fill out budget with photo tips for Scene stories
- Assist Scene reporters and freelance reporters with writing and in improving their work, and edit all freelance work for inaccuracy, bad grammar, poor organization, libel and improper style
- Become familiar with the rules of the Associated Press and Emerald style
- Ensure that all sources in the assigned beat areas are regularly covered
- Coordinate with the graphics department to ensure as many stories as possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tips
- Advise the editor in chief and managing editor on issues in assigned beat areas
- Meet daily deadlines and ensure reporters do as well
- Prepare a weekly budget for Scene pages and select photos to accompany stories
- Monitor reporters for compliance of job duties
- Assist in the hiring of Scene reporters
- Ensure that all reporters are effectively utilized and receive ongoing training
- Manage and contribute to the online ODE Calendar of Events
- Issue and assign blog posts, Twitter alerts and breaking stories online as necessary
- Keep regular office hours
- Attend required staff meetings, and schedule weekly desk meetings with reporters to discuss problems and plan coverage
- Attend week ahead meetings on Sunday and budget meetings at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
- Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of all issues that need to be covered, and see that no pertinent news is missed
- Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills, and help others set goals to improve their journalistic skills
- Contribute to supplements as needed
