The University of Oregon announced this afternoon that it has purchased a property that will be part of the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact.
The property is located on the corner of Franklin Boulevard and Agate Street about a block north of the UO Health Center. The school paid $1.9 million for the property where a Domino’s Pizza currently resides, according to university spokesman Tobin Klinger.
“That was a space that was identified as being an important piece of the puzzle in terms of being able to move that incredibly important project forward rapidly,” said Klinger.
The university and former owner of the property will provide financial support for the owner of the Domino’s Pizza currently located on the property. This property was the last privately owned property that UO needed to purchase before construction can begin, according to Klinger.
“We are happy that we were able to close on it and keep the Knight Campus moving forward,” said Klinger. “We are really pleased with the progress that we have been able to make to date.”
The project is a $1 billion initiative and $500 million of that came from Nike Co-Founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny. The Knight Campus project will break ground this fall and construction will begin in the spring. The first building will open for use in about three years and the project will finish in around ten years, according to Klinger.
The owner of the Domino’s Pizza franchise couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
