After a lengthy nationwide search to find the next Oregon men’s head basketball coach, it appears the Oregon athletic department is getting closer to making its final decision.
The Register-Guard’s Bob Clark reported Sunday afternoon that sources say Oregon will be making an official offer to Creighton head coach Dana Altman sometime soon. The search featured a handful of high-profile coaches, most notably Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, before ultimately ending with Altman.
Reports from The Oregonian say Altman will be on his way to Eugene this week with a seven-year contract worth almost $2 million per year. Altman was almost entirely off the radar until he accepted an offer from former Oregon athletic director Pat Kilkenny on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis.
The 37-day search definitely took a bit of a toll on the program, with three student-athletes leaving the team during that time.
Altman, 51, was stationed at Creighton for the past 16 seasons, leading the Bluejays to 13 postseason appearances and seven NCAA tournament berths. During his tenure with Creighton, the program went 327-176 (.650), bringing his 21-year career record to 410-243 (.628).
While both Kilkenny and Altman were unavailable for comment according to The Oregonian, Altman is expected to appear in a public press conference early this week
