The Oregon women’s lacrosse team kicked of the 2010 season with a 22-6 win over Jacksonville University on Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks’ point total matched the school record for goals scored in one game, which was set against Saint Mary’s during the 2006 season.
Oregon freshman Maggie Kovacs came off the bench to tally six points on four goals and two assists, while junior midfielder Alex Breiner scored a game-high five goals. The Ducks went into halftime with a comfortable 9-3 lead before pouring it on with another 13 goals in the second half.
Sophomore Jana Drummond, the Ducks’ leading returning point scorer from last season, recorded three goals on eight shots. Oregon outshot Jacksonville 40-16 on the day, including a 6-for-10 effort on free position shots compared to just 1-for-2 from Jacksonville.
With the departure of three-year starting goalkeeper Anna Poponyak, redshirt junior Hannah Jones got the starting nod in the net for the Ducks. She allowed three goals in the first half and recorded three saves as well in the winning effort. Senior Sam DeBow saw some action between the pipes during the opening 13 minutes of the second half, with freshman Salliebeth Finnegan playing the final 16 minutes.
Oregon will play its home opener on Friday, Feb. 21, at 11 a.m. when they host St. Bonaventure at Papé Field.
