After one round of play at the Gifford Collegiate Championship in San Martin, Calif., the Oregon men’s golf team is in fifth place.
The Ducks finished the day 20 stokes over par, behind Northwestern (+16), Washington (+15), Stanford (+13), and host UCLA (+12), but ahead of USC (+23), Oklahoma (+24), San Diego (+25), Long Beach State (+26), Arizona (+28), Lamar (+29) and Augusta State (+30) in the 12-team field.
In the individual competition, Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki is tied for fifth at one over par. Miernicki, who shot the low round of the day for Oregon, bogeyed three of his first six holes, but bounced back nicely with four birdies during the round.
Sean Maekawa is tied for 13th after a round of three over par. A double bogey on the sixth hole put a damper on an otherwise nearly flawless round.
Andrew Vijarro is tied for 25th after shooting four over par. Vijarro finished with five bogeys and one birdie.
Robbie Ziegler (+5), Eugene Wong (+7), and Jack Dukeminier (+8) rounded out Oregon’s playing rotation.
The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow from CordeValle Golf Course for the second of three rounds.
