Oregon volleyball is reloading its team with talent after signing its 2019 recruiting class for head coach Matt Ulmer’s third year at the helm.
The Ducks will lose seniors Sumeet Gill, Lauren Page, August Raskie and Lindsey Vander Weide at the conclusion of this season.
Five players signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Each player is ranked inside the top 80 on prepvolleyball.com’s Senior Aces list. Three are ranked in the top 30 and two Under Armour all-Americans.
“This is a terrific group of young women that are going to represent out University and program at the highest level,” Ulmer said in a press release. “We have found five student athletes that enhance our culture, competitiveness, physicality and IQ. I’m extremely grateful to be able to work with and mentor this dedicated class.”
Elise Ferreira, a setter from Bakersfield, California, is ranked No. 80 by Senior Aces. Ferreira will be coming in to help fill the void left by Raskie. Ferreira will be in a position battle with freshman Kylie Robinson for next year’s starting job. Ferreira is also the daughter of former Oregon head coach, Carl Ferreira, who coached the Ducks from 2000 to 2004.
Alex Laita, outside hitter from Pacific Palisades, California, is ranked No. 56, will be added to an veteran rotation of outside hitters for the Ducks. Oregon will be losing two of its six outside hitters (Vander Weide and Page).
Morgan Lewis, middle blocker/right-side hitter from Carlsbad, California, is ranked No. 25. Lewis is a big hitter who is referred to as one of the biggest arms in the class and racked up more than 1,000 kills in her high school career.
Georgia Murphy, libero from The Woodlands, Texas, is ranked No. 27. Murphy is the lone libero in the class and will step in for current freshman Brooke Nuneviller, who’s had a stellar freshman campaign, but is set to switch to outside hitter after this year. Murphy is the highest ranked libero in the 2019 recruiting class nationwide.
Taylor Williams, outside hitter and a Eugene native, is the highest ranked recruit in the class at No. 23. Williams, who grew up a Duck fan, will get to live out her dream and add to a rich rotation of outside hitters.
Oregon will have a lot to look forward to next year. For now, its focus will be on the rest of this season, which includes a spot at hosting an opening round of the NCAA tournament, as the Ducks look to win out and earn their best finish in the Pac-12 since 2012.
