Welcome to the age of self-expression and self-exploration, well, in terms of fashion. Marc Jacobs has done a collection with polka dots, Chris Benz has made a definitive fashion as art collection, Sarah Burton has taken the reigns of the Alexander McQueen brand, and the Olsen twins are now fashion moguls. But, where does all this leave college students? Well, generally in the category of not being able to afford these lines. However, it does give us the unique opportunity to learn from world-renown designers and fashion icons, and it leaves us with the chance to try all of these fashions, find our own personal styles, and make a statement with our choices in garments. Because of this college campuses are filled with various trends and styles, creating a mosaic of looks.
With all of this running through my head, I began to wonder, is there anything that can connect all of the various fashions seen on campus? The long and short of it is that it is complicated. But, to make the short of it, outerwear and an umbrella are key staples in this time of transitioning seasons, and when dealing with the often-volatile weather.
My personal choices for these two items came from practicality and the very small size of my bank account. I prefer my faux leather jacket because it works for the elements and is well tailored, so it looks as if it was made to fit my body. The asymmetrical design creates a fitted look and it nips in at the waist, which is generally the smallest part of the female figure. It you have a more boyish shape this style of jacket can suit you very well by creating the illusion of curves. Leather jackets are on cue to stay around for the chilly days in the springs, as well as next autumn/winter, so look for one that suits you now and it will be a worthwhile investment.
The second key aspect with my featured look is a functional umbrella. There are many styles, shapes and functions out there and they come at a variety of price ranges. For a trendier look clear, bubble umbrellas are huge right now and have been shown in Gossip Girl and Sex and the City. But, I understand that these aren’t for everybody. Neutral colored umbrellas go with absolutely everything, but a bright red umbrella can make add a pop to any look. Totes makes a quality umbrella and at a reasonable price in various styles.
The other elements of my featured look are two-toned, statements tights, an oversized, gold boyfriend watch (I wear this everyday), a gray Gap sweater, a classic pencil skirt, a black, quilted bag, black pumps, and other accessories.
When venturing out to define your style and self, don’t forget about function and practicality. This does not mean sacrificing style or quality, but making your pieces work for you. Fashion is about finding what appeals to you and making it work for you–outerwear and umbrellas included.
