It was another busy weekend for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams. The women headed to Minneapolis for matches against Oklahoma and Minnesota, while the men stayed home to welcome Seattle University on Saturday.
After winning their first four matches, the women finally hit a stumbling block during the season’s first road trip. The Ducks lost both matches by a score of 2-5, dropping their overall record to 4-2.
In the first match on Saturday against Oklahoma, Oregon fell behind early as the Sooners took the doubles point. Senior Pavlina Smatova and sophomore Patricia Skowronski won their doubles match 8-7 (7-1), but Oklahoma came away with the other two to win the point.
From there, the Ducks continued to struggle in singles play. Skowronski and freshman Rabea Stuckemann were the only two players to win matches, and the Ducks eventually fell by a total of 2-5.
Sunday brought a different team, but the same result. The Ducks fell 2-5 to Minnesota, with Smatova and Skowronski once again coming away as the only doubles winners. Stuckemann and freshman Pascale Neubert won their singles matches, but the Ducks dropped the other four.
The women play again Friday on the road against Colorado.
For the men, the weekend was a bit more relaxing. The Ducks had just one match at home with Seattle and made quick work of the Redhawks in a 7-0 victory. Early on, Oregon won each of its three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. The team went on to sweep through singles play, as well, and the shutout was complete.
Oregon (7-1) has won five of its first six home matches. The men play again Thursday on the road against UC Irvine.
