The No. 16 Oregon women’s volleyball team (9-1, 2-0) put the cap on a successful first weekend of conference play on Sunday, defeating Arizona State (4-7, 0-2) on Sunday in four sets, 25-12, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma led the way with 22 kills, 5 digs and a .391 hitting percentage, while sophomore setter Lauren Plum came through with 53 assists and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter Katherine Fischer, meanwhile, struggled with her ball striking (.057 hitting), but found other ways to contribute with 16 digs and a service ace.
In all, the Ducks hit .279 for the day while holding Arizona State to .161 from the floor. In the decisive fourth set of the match, the Sun Devils had a chance to tie the score at two sets apiece and force a fifth set. An attack error by Fischer tied the set’s score at 22, and Oregon called a timeout. The teams traded points, tying once again at 23, before two straight kills by sophomore middle blocker Ariana Williams and Bergsma put the match away for good.
A perfect first weekend of conference play now behind them, the Ducks hit the road this week to face off with conference newcomers Colorado and Utah.
