Oregon freshman Malik Hairston was named preseason national newcomer of the year by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.
The 6-foot-6 Hairston becomes the first Duck ever to be named the newcomer of the year in the 24 years Blue Ribbon has been putting out the list.
“When we pick our top newcomer, we try to look at two things,” Blue Ribbon editor Chris Dortch. “One, obviously, the player has to be talented. Two, we look to see if a player figures to have a prominent role. Malik Hairston qualifies on both counts. He’s a great player, but we also think he’ll make major contributions to Oregon’s success. He’ll be as important to his team as any freshman in the country.”
Hairston will be looked upon to fill some of the hole left by lottery pick Luke Jackson, who averaged 21.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
The Detroit native was a McDonald’s All-American during his senior season, as well as first team all-state and all-Metro and averaged 20.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 4.0 blocks and 2.5 steals per game as a senior.
