On Nov. 14, the University of Oregon sent an email statement to all students describing reports “disturbing reports of hateful, antisemitic incidents in Unthank residence hall.” The statement also included information regarding “brochures” being distributed to some students under the doors of their dormitory rooms.
In the Nov. 14 Daily Emerald article titled, “UO responds to “antisemitic incidents” in residence halls,” the distinction between the two events was unclear.
According to an Instagram post made by the groups of the UO Palestine Coalition: UO Students for Justice in Palestine, UO Jewish Voice for Peace, UO Young Democrat Socialists of America, UO Faculty & Staff for Justice in Palestine, UO Muslim Student Association and UO Climate Justice League, the two events were “entirely unrelated.”
The UO Palestine Coalition recently published its second edition of its “Olive Tree” newsletter.
“The Olive Tree [newsletters] were distributed on a different day than the swastika was reportedly drawn and posters were removed, because the two [events] were entirely unrelated,” the Instagram post said.
The post states that “The UO Palestine Coalition unequivocally condemns antisemitism of any kind,” and that JVP was not contacted by UO regarding the “brochures” prior to the email statement that was released.
Editor’s Note: The newsletters that were distributed by the UO Palestine Coalition do not correlate with the reported antisemitic incidents that occurred on Nov. 10.
According to the Daily Emerald’s “no-surprises” policy, all parties included in an article are to be contacted to avoid miscommunication within a story. The Emerald regrets its error in not contacting Jewish Voice for Peace within a timely manner for its initial breaking news article.
