At Emerald Media Group we are anything but ordinary. We look for a very specific personality and skill set in the students we hire and train to be industry-leading professionals.

At the Emerald, nothing is ever good enough. We’re creators, innovators, entrepreneurs and our own worst critic. Every facet of our organization is constantly being reinvented and challenges the conventional. We identify quickly what doesn’t work, and focus on finding out what does. We do things differently in an effort to “make college better.” Better for the people that work for us as well as those who interact with us.

Failure motivates us. Problem solving energizes us. Experimentation fascinates us. Success drives us. When we’ve created something great, we move on and strive to create something better.

If you have a devotion to digital innovation and excellence, a strong work ethic, thrive in a fast paced environment and are as passionate about helping change the lives of the Emerald staff as we are about changing the lives of those around us, we want you.

Open Positions:

News Reporter

News reporters are the Emerald’s first responders. They work relentlessly and passionately to inform the UO community on all things ASUO, UOPD, administration, city council, environment and beyond. When news breaks, they cover it. When UO students have questions, they turn to our news reporters to answer them. Reporters may work on long form, in-depth and investigative pieces as well as shorter breaking news stories.

Arts & Culture Writer

A&C writers uncover and report news in Eugene’s arts and culture scene and write subjective commentary on the arts, giving their unique perspective as a college student in their area of focus. Reporting includes features on local people, organizations and events. Subjective commentary includes reviews, advice columns and personal essays. Writers work with their editor to develop pitches, contact and interview sources and produce polished stories on deadline.

Opinion Columnist

Opinion Columnists provide well-informed perspectives on local issues affecting the UO community, often prompting debate and encouraging readers to consider something from a different point of view. They thoroughly research their topics, stay on top of local issues and aren’t afraid to disagree with the status quo. Columns should be truthful and written in an authoritative manner.

Investigative Reporter

Investigative reporters work with the Emerald’s news team on longer-form projects and stories. These reporters are experienced with a strong understanding of ethics, and are prepared to take on challenging stories, face complex issues and work outside of a traditional weekly publication schedule.

Photographer

Photographers are responsible for shooting and editing images for the Daily Emerald. Photo coverage ranges from cover stories, breaking news, events, stock photos, portraits, sports & action photography, concerts and more. Photographers are encouraged to have interest in journalistic storytelling.

Videographer

Videographers are essential visionaries at the Daily Emerald. They work closely with writers and reporters on the front lines to bring written stories to life. Videographers are always on the watch for news — either stories within the UO community, the greater Eugene area or statewide. At the Daily Emerald, the videographers are independent, creative visual storytellers who capture critical moments.

Copy Editor

Copy editors are the Emerald’s last line of defense from grammatical and style errors. They read every story published at the Emerald for grammar and comprehension issues. Knowledge of the AP Stylebook rules and basic grammar rules is necessary in this position.

Illustrator

Illustrators create digital illustrations to go along with written stories, communicating with writers and editors to create artwork that captures the essence of a story. They also create stand alone visual stories.

Social Graphic Designer

Have thoughts on our graphics or have a creative edge?

Come work for us and enhance how we connect news with our digital audience. Social graphic designers curate our social brand and make the graphics you see on our social media platforms. Designers are expected to make multiple graphics per week and engage in creative discussions with the team.

Design Desk

The Design Desk shapes how readers experience the Emerald. Designers create print layouts, graphics and digital visuals that make stories clear, engaging and impactful. Working with editors, photographers and illustrators, the desk ensures our journalism looks professional while giving space for creativity and experimentation.
