The Eugene Police Department has told the Daily Emerald there is an ongoing criminal investigation into a fraternity live out associated with University of Oregon’s Phi Delta Theta chapter.
In conversation with the Emerald, EPD said it opened the investigation on Feb. 12, 2024 and assigned it to the department’s Special Investigations Unit. So far, no charges have been made.
All records of the investigation remain exempt from disclosure under Oregon law, which protects “Investigatory information compiled for criminal law purposes,” according to ORS 192.345(3).
Even though the live out, located at 1544 Patterson St., is a different address than Phi Delta’s chapter facility, located at 1472 Kincaid St., it falls within UO’s jurisdiction based on its affiliation with the university-recognized fraternity. The university does not manage either, or any, fraternity property.
Following the criminal investigation, UO placed Phi Delta on interim suspension on Feb. 15. In emails from UO’s Associate Dean of Students obtained by the Emerald, Phi Delta was temporarily suspended because of allegations that “one or more students were drugged,” on Feb. 10 at the chapter’s live out facility.
In 2021, the university suspended Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a no longer affiliated fraternity chapter that is no longer affiliated with the university, due to multiple “substantiated allegations” of drugging, UO’s Fraternity and Sorority Life website says. The alleged druggings took place at one of Sigma Alpha’s live out facilities and the chapter remains under a three-year suspension.
UO’s Office of Public Records denied a request the Emerald made regarding live out addresses, stating that “the University does not register fraternity live outs.”
