It didn’t take long for the Ducks to find offensive traction this time.
Just over 24 hours after being held scoreless with two hits against No. 1 Florida, Oregon jumped all over San Diego State early to win 7-3 in the San Diego Classic.
Head coach Mike White tinkered with the lineup a bit and moved Alyssa Gillespie into the leadoff spot and dropped usual-No. 1 hitter Janie Takeda to No. 3. Jenna Lilley, the usual No. 3 hitter, then moved up to the second spot to fill the void left by Gillespie.
The change seemed to work as the Ducks scored runs in the first three innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
Gillespie started the game off with a bunt single and came around to score on cleanup hitter Hailey Decker’s sacrifice fly.
The offense then erupted for three runs in the second inning as the Ducks totaled five hits in the frame. Oregon added two more runs in the third inning with Koral Costa’s two-run blast doing the damage.
Cheridan Hawkins rebounded from the Florida loss yesterday to earn the win and improve her record to 6-2 while Geri Ann Glasco got the save.
Hawkins threw 4.0 innings and gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts before Glasco took over. Glasco gave up two immediate runs in the fifth but then settled down to throw a scoreless final two innings.
Oregon’s final game of the San Diego Classic against Grand Canyon University was cancelled today due to rain.
