The results of the ASUO elections for week one were released Friday, April 6, allowing the presidential candidate from Katie and Alex and We Are Oregon to advance.
All of the ballot measures passed except for the EMU renovation, which lost by only 480 votes. Sam Dotters-Katz@@http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-502323_162-4261446.html@@, former ASUO president and director of the YES campaign, attributes it to the fact that students were not informed on the importance of this measure. The Student Recreation Center renovation did pass, and steps will be taken to move forward on that renovation.
“I am still glad to see the strong support for the SRC project, and we look forward to engaging students again soon on the conversation of renovating the heart of our campus,” Dotters-Katz said.
The other ballot measures to pass include: the initiative for the University to go bottled water-free, the reinstatement for anonymous report forms, that the Department of Public Safety should stay weapon-free and that the athletic department should put money toward a scholarship for other students.
The University is now entering week two of ASUO elections starting Monday at 9 a.m. This means one more week of campaigning and one last chance to vote.
The top two candidates from every position will advance to the general election, which ends at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Just like last week, presidential and vice presidential candidates will have the chance to discuss student issues at a debate Tuesday evening.
Katie and Alex and We Are Oregon will be going head-to-head for the presidential campaign in this coming week.
“Our plan is to engage a one-on-one personal conversation with students and educate them on our platform,” said We Are Oregon presidential candidate Laura Hinman@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=Laura+Hinman@@. “We will continue to have a big presence on campus and show we are the best choice.”
Unlike last week, this week’s ballot will not include ballot measures. Only two of the senator positions were decided in the primary election.
