The National Science Foundation awarded the University of Oregon $500,000 to create BONSAI, or the Bridging Open Networks for Scientific Applications and Innovation. The new “cloud-computing” system will create a place where resources and software are shared across the Internet.
The system will help interdisciplinary research teams with on-campus access to computational resources, offers 10 gbps connectivity to Internet2, storage space and visualization capabilities.
Professor Allen Maloney and Assistant Professor Reza Rejaie from computer and information science, Network Architect & Asst. Director for Network Engineering Jose Dominguez were the leaders of a group of researchers in the fields of physics, biology and computer science. Kimberly Espy, vice president for research and innovation and network architects and engineers from NTS, were also a part of the group to help create the concept.
