An Amtrak train struck and killed 49-year-old James Daywitt Thursday near Eighth Avenue and Hilyard Street around 5:15 p.m., according to Eugene police spokeswoman Jenna McCulley.
Daywitt, of Eugene, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was traveling southbound on his bicycle, wearing a helmet and may have been wearing headphones, police said. The train was traveling eastbound.
Eugene police officers were investigating the scene until 9:30 p.m. yesterday.
