Don’t have enough time to snuggle by the fireplace this winter? You aren’t alone. Outside may be frigid, but that doesn’t mean your time around campus needs to be. Here is a list of warm places to keep your person, your time, your taste buds and your peace of mind away from the cold.
Best place to stay warm on campus between classes: The Buzz Cafe@@http://gowalla.com/spots/170441@@
Located beneath the mass of the EMU, the cafe not only serves hot drinks, hot sandwiches and pizza, but the masses of students leaking in and out of the cafe keep it buzzing, and they also provide lots of body heat and chatter as the aroma of coffee lingers. Although the clamor is not always ideal for studying, The Buzz assures warmth and cheer throughout the winter, except if you sit by the front entrance through which the cold weather often slips.
Best place to stay warm off campus: Vero Espresso
Located on the corner of 14th and Pearl@@checked@@, this Victorian-style house dressed in yellow paint and bay windows is as picturesque inside as it is out. Inside the espresso house, there are large tables perfect for studying, comfy chairs and an abundance of coffee. Like The Buzz, the warmth of Vero emulates from the people inside. It is not only a must-see place of Eugene but also a perfect place to spend time beating the cold during winter term.
Best place for good food to warm you up: Barry’s Espresso Bakery and Deli
Located in the campus food strip on the corner of 12th and Alder@@yeah@@, Barry’s serves up hearty soups, espressos, baked goodies and warm sandwiches. Barry’s is known for serving delicious Jewish favorites such as challah bread@@spelled correctly@@ and desserts. The cold draft blowing in and the often chilly, wooden benches are easily warmed with a cozy throw pillow and a warm bowl of soup.
Best warm place to nap: The velvet couch area in the EMU
Tired? Bored? Both? The emerald-green couches and chairs are generally where you’ll find weary students nestled up to read a book or take a nap. All who venture to sit in the area abide by an unspoken rule of silence. And those who don’t are generally glared upon. Not just cozy and warm, the view from the windows provide good people-watching opportunities and a view of the outside.
Best quiet and warm place to study/work: Third and fourth floor of the law library
Most students are aware of the John E. Jaqua Library@@http://libweb.uoregon.edu/law/@@ located on the second floor of the law building. However, accessible by the library’s side staircase or elevator is a well-kept gem; a third and fourth floor filled with study desks, chairs and couches, with the final floor providing an aerial view from all levels. Since heat rises, every level provides students with a little more warmth. The levels tend to be pretty quiet and without crowds of people.
Best warm hangout place: Mills International Center@@http://mills.uoregon.edu/@@
Also tucked away in a far corner of the main level of the EMU, the Mills International Center is a burst of livelihood. With decorations and resources from across the world, students will often find others chatting with a group of friends, using the computer or cuddling up on the couch to read or study. The vibe of the Mills International Center is friendly and comfortable, no matter the weather outside.
