The American Volleyball Coaches Association has named Oregon outside hitter Alaina Bergsma National Player of the Year just days after Bergsma and teammate Lauren Plum were named first team All-Americans. The award is the top honor awarded to an NCAA volleyball player.
The senior from Chandler, Ariz., is the first Duck to take home such honors, and it comes in the same year Jim Moore’s squad will play in its first national championship match. Bergsma was also named Pac-12 Player of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player of the Ducks’ regional tournament.
Bergsma led the Pac-12 in both kills and points and was in the top ten in hitting percentage at .340.
