The Oregon men’s tennis team faced three California schools during the break and beat University of California Riverside 6-1 while the Ducks lost to No. 4 USC and No. 6 UCLA by identical scores of 6-1.
Against USC, Geoff Embry was the only Oregon player to win a match, defeating the Trojans’ No. 5 singles player Jason McNaughton in three sets (5-7, 6-4, 10-8). Embry extended his winning streak to eight matches but had it snapped the following match against UCLA’s Nick Meister in two sets (6-4, 6-4).
“We played a good match,” Oregon coach Nils Schyllander said. “Geoff really stepped up and Stephen (Wiechert) and Romeo (Mortera) were right in there. This young group is definitely progressing.”
Against UCLA, the Oregon men’s No. 1 singles player Marcos Verdasco recorded the only Duck victory, defeating the Bruins’ Harel Srugo, the 30th-ranked player in the nation, 7-6 in one set before Srugo retired.
The women, meanwhile, took down both Washington State and Washington by scores of 7-0 and 5-2, respectively, but were unable to handle the top-10 Southern California schools. The Ducks were shut out 7-0 by both No. 10 USC and No. 8 UCLA over the last weekend.
Oregon’s No. 2 singles player Carmen Seremeta came the closest to pulling off a victory against UCLA, losing in three sets to No. 47-ranked Tracy Lin (4-6, 6-3, 10-6).
