The deadline to send ballots by mail has passed, so voters will have to take them to any one of several drop-off locations in Eugene before tonight’s deadline.
Students living near campus can take theirs to a drop box outside the EMU near the ASUO office. Another drop box sits in the parking lot of the Juvenile Justice Center, across Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from Autzen Stadium.
Lane County elections coordinator Annette Newingham said so far, the county’s overall turnout has been high for a primary election, but the precincts where students typically live haven’t kept pace. Through Sunday, however, Lane County’s overall turnout stood at just more than 40 percent, Newingham said.
“That’s really pretty good and strong,” she said, adding “there’s potential for another 40,000 ballots,” which could push turnout as high as 60 or 61 percent.
Newingham said the last time the county saw similar numbers was 2000, also the last presidential election without an incumbent candidate.
“We’re at another presidential change right now,” Newingham said. “I think we should have a pretty good turnout. We might get a record.”
