Today is the last day of Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s State Employees’ Food Drive. All the food and money collected from the University’s drive benefits FOOD for Lane County.
This year’s goal is to raise 175,000 pounds of food, according to coordinator Karen Scheeland. Because the drive is wrapping up, Scheeland said monetary donations may be best today, and $1 is equal to 5 pounds of food. The University is competing with other universities in the state.
There are also two auctions ending today that benefit the food drive. The English department is holding a silent auction in the Booth Lounge at 108 PLC through 4 p.m. Items include a Disney DVD set, handcrafted necklaces, a hand-knit scarf, Mucho Gusto gift cards and a guided fishing trip for two down the McKenzie River. The gift cards were donated by Mucho Gusto and all other items were donated by English department faculty, staff and GTFs.
Susan Dickens of the English department said people can stop by and make a bid for any item and can “always donate food, there’s room in our barrels.”
The School of Journalism and Communication is holding an online auction through 4 p.m. at http://jcomm.uoregon.edu/auctions/auction.php. Items include an antique oak chair, a jellyfish sculpture, several meals and two McKenzie River rafting trips.
Items were either made or donated by SOJC staff, faculty, administration or graduate students, said Sue Varani, SOJC faculty services coordinator, in an e-mail. One item is a pie-a-month baked by SOJC staff members Petra Hagen or Janet Studer-Stratton.
Drop-off locations for food or monetary donations include: Oregon Hall, the school of journalism, the business school, housing, the Knight Library, The Duck Store, the law school and the EMU.
