Halloween weekend kept Eugene police busy on and off campus, with 241 calls for service occurring near campus on Halloween night and an officer-involved shooting on Sunday, according to Eugene Police Department news releases.
A man suspected of committing a murder on Saturday night was shot by police Sunday morning, EPD reported.
Juan Carlos Aleman, 32, was wanted in connection to a shooting of two men – one of whom died, an EPD release said. The shooting occurred in West Eugene at a house near the 2700 block of Morse Street.
Police K-9, SWAT, and Crisis Negotiation Teams responded to the scene, evacuating neighboring homes and calling for the lockdown of a nearby church. At about noon, Aleman reportedly came out of the house and was told by officers to comply with directions in both English and Spanish, but ignored officers and went back inside the house, Interim Police Chief Pete Kerns said.
Aleman came out of the house again with two knives, ignoring commands from officers to drop the weapons, according to the release. One officer shot him with a sponge-round weapon, and another officer shot him with a rifle.

After being shot, Kerns said Aleman continued to move toward officers, and another officer used a Taser on him to take him into custody. Aleman was taken to the hospital, but the status of his condition was unknown.
The District Attorney and the police Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team are investigating the incident, and at least the three officers who used weapons will be on administrative leave, Kerns said.
A woman and three children were also in the house with Aleman, and they exited the house after Aleman was taken into custody, according to EPD Public Information Director Melinda Kletzok.
The motive of Saturday night’s murder remains unknown to police, and Kerns said he believes Aleman has a criminal background in Lane County. Kerns also said officers were working on obtaining a warrant to search the residence where Aleman was found.
Near campus, the 241 calls occurred between 9 p.m. on Halloween and 3 a.m. on Nov. 1- more than double the number of calls last year, according to an EPD news release.
EPD’s Crowd Control Team patrolled the West University area on foot and by bike, making 101 person stops for a variety of alcohol-related offenses including minor in possession and open container citations, and many citations for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Officers also responded to numerous loud parties, fights and disputes, and arrested a person for throwing a whisky bottle at passing officers.
