A laptop computer containing tax information, addresses and phone numbers of Chi Omega sorority members was stolen from the chapter’s house Tuesday night after somebody squeezed through about an 11-inch window opening while about 20 women were home, police and the chapter president said.
Between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 12:30 a.m. somebody pried open and broke a lock on a window to the Chi Omega house, at 1461 Alder St., crawled through and stole a laptop and its power cord, Eugene police and chapter President Libby Whittemore said.
Whittemore, a sophomore journalism major, said she estimates about half of the house residents were home at the time, and that the burglar probably crawled back through the window because he or she would have likely been seen leaving by the front door.
The laptop, which belonged to the chapter, had all of the chapter’s information on it, including speeches and calendars, Whittemore said.
Whittemore said the chapter is talking about getting an expensive security system because the house residents are “a little bit scared right now.” The house was also broken into last year, she said.
She said several house members saw a lanky, blond-haired man wearing a black baseball cap, shirt and pants suspiciously examining the place and the window several times earlier Tuesday.
