As a photographer shooting a political debate, I was reminded of old playground taunts. Liar, liar pants on fire. He said, she said. You smelly pants. During last Monday’s Congressional debate at Lane Community College, the two candidates played the 7-year-old role quite well. The issues each discussed were serious, yet the reactions they evoked from one another were not. With each rebuttal the opposing candidate’s face would contort, their lips would protrude to a pout, and their hands would grip the podium a little tighter. My assignment was to shoot the event and get an impartial image of each candidate. Yet as my eyes strained through a viewfinder, all I witnessed were the expressions of the
playground soap opera. The he said, she said taunts and dramas.
