Before You Leave:
? Make sure your car is in “tip-top shape.” Check your air filter, wipers, lights, spark plug, tires, brakes, belts and hoses or have someone else who is knowledgeable examine these parts.
? Spend the necessary time to pre-plan your route with traveling companions and estimate where you will need to re-fuel. Gas prices for
almost every city in the nation, listed by station, can be found at www.AAA.com.
? Bring the necessary documentation: Be sure you have your license, registration and proof of insurance. If you’re traveling out of the country by automobile be sure to bring a valid ID and birth certificate or passport. After January 2007 a
passport will be mandatory.
On the Road:
? When driving long distances be sure to get a good night’s sleep and drive during the hours you are
usually awake.
? Leave time in itineraries for delays and complications and breaks. If you feel drowsy then stop the car and take a break. Cold air does little to “clear the cobwebs.” A good rule of thumb is to break once every two hours or 100 miles.
? Follow the “When in Rome…” philosophy: Obey local
driving laws, which can often vary dramatically from state to state and city to city.
? Make sure tires are properly inflated to ensure efficient gas mileage and to save money.
