Despite the fact that it is a newcomer to the Eugene bar scene, Jameson’s is already predicted to be a big hit. The relatively new bar sits at the corner of Broadway and Olive where Cafe Paradiso used to be.
At first glance, Jameson’s looks like an upscale jazz bar that invites patrons to engage in intellectual conversation over a glass of red wine and soft background music. The red mahogany bar’s colorful lamps make a luminous rainbow for thirsty customers to sit around. The sitting area consists of lush vintage couches that create a warm and inviting atmosphere, which, with colored lights and modern interior, create a trendy lounge-like vibe.
After examining the details, it becomes clear that Jameson’s is hard to label. It is not a lounge, nor is it a traditional bar. It is a hybrid. Traditional booths are mixed with a sitting lounge. Fancy art on the walls contrasts a single pool table in the back. The music changes according to who is behind the bar, but rumor has it that a jukebox will be up soon.
The bar’s lack of TVs makes it clear that this is not the place to be when the Ducks are playing, nor would it be “Sex and the City” character Carrie Bradshaw’s first choice on a Saturday night. This is not the place to flash designer shoes and sip trendy drinks while gazing around for a one-night stand, nor is it the spot to go crazy on the dance floor.
“We wanted a nice comfortable lounge where people could come and have cocktails, not be distracted by a television or loud music,” bartender Ty Connor said.
Jameson’s is definitely a fresh alternative to the let’s-hit-on-as-many-girls-as-we-can-after-we-finish-the-kegs kind of places. Jameson’s attracts a more laid-back, mature audience.
Connor explained that downtown Eugene needed an alternative for those too old to go to student bars or those who seek something other than Indigo District or Luckey’s.
“We want to create our own, unique atmosphere,” Connor said. “We want to stand out from the other bars. We don’t charge cover, and we will also try to have a sushi night once a month.”
On sushi nights, customers can try fresh sushi samples for free.
“This is an untraditional bar that targets all ages and social cliques,” Matthew Villanueva said while ordering a pint. “It is unpretentious and has something to offer to anybody.”
“Jameson’s has a cool, chill vibe to it,” customer Barry Schwarz said. “I love that there is no cover charge. It makes me feel more welcome!”
Jameson’s owner James Carroll appreciates positive feedback, but doesn’t want to take for granted that the bar will be a success as some have predicted.
“You never know,” Carroll said. “This is a tough business, and we have only been open a month and a half. I just want this to be a mellow place where anybody can stop by.”
The bar holds a fairly good collection of liquor, mainly whiskey and scotch, but it would score higher points by offering a wider selection of mixed drinks and cocktails and adding frozen daiquiris to the menu. What is a bar without frozen daiquiris?
Nevertheless, Jameson’s deserves credit for its prices during happy hours, when customers enjoy free pool and cheap drinks, every day from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Microbrews and 20-ounce Guinness’ are $ 2.50, Pabst is $1.50 and cocktails are $1 off.
The free entrance is absolutely a plus. For students on a tight budget, any place with no cover charge is worth a visit.
