Students who want to submit ballot initiatives for the upcoming ASUO election have an extra week to complete the process, Elections Coordinator Dante Vivanco said.
The deadline for submitting initiatives to the ASUO was originally March 2, but after speaking with people who were having trouble getting their initiatives together, Vivanco extended the deadline to March 9.
Initiatives must have had their wording approved by the ASUO Constitution Court and be supported by 5 percent of the students – approximately 1,019 students – before they are submitted to the ASUO.
Signatures may not be gathered until the Constitution Court has approved the wording of an initiative and any signatures gathered prior to the approval of the wording will be invalidated, Vivanco said.
The ASUO President may place an initiative on the ballot without signatures. The Student Senate may do so as well with a two-thirds vote of its members.
Those submitting initiatives for review must fill out a “Petition for Review Form,” available at the Constitution Court desk in the ASUO office (suite 4 of the EMU), submit five copies of the measure to the Court’s box in the ASUO office, and e-mail the Court at [email protected], indicating that the measure has been turned in.
