On your way to school and need a quick picker-upper? Or looking for a quaint coffee house without the hustle, bustle and corporate stigma of Starbucks? The University area provides quite an outlet for quirky little caffeine stops within walking or bicycling distance from campus.
Allan Brothers Beanery
Though it’s a bit of a lengthy stroll from campus, Allan Brothers Beanery is well worth the walk. Nestled next to Jamie’s Hamburgers at 2465 Hilyard St., the Beanery is a quiet and relaxing stop for that coffee or snack fix.
Boasting not only a variety of beverages ranging from gourmet and organic coffee to Odwalla Juice and herbal teas but also luncheon items including quiche, lasagna and sandwiches, the Beanery is able to cater to more than just the breakfast crowd.
Open early to late, the Beanery features breakfast specials such as a pastry and 12-ounce coffee for $2.20 and a bowl of granola for $2.50. And if you’re in the shopping mood, you can select from charming picture frames, postcards and other knick-knacks.
Open Monday- Thursday, 6 a.m.to 9 p.m.; Friday- Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sundays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Espresso Roma
Location is a prime attraction for this eclectic coffee house. Situated at 825 E. 13th Ave., Espresso Roma bears the marks of a recent renovation, complete with cheerful yellow and orange paint designed to help kick start your day.
With a very large indoor and some outdoor seating, Espresso Roma serves as a quiet haven for studying students to escape the sterility of the classroom and the boisterous vendors on 13th Avenue. The walls are adorned with artwork and the sound of classical music wafts in the background.
Besides coffee, Espresso Roma specializes in croissants, ranging in price from $1.10 for plain to $2.50 for ham and cheese. Scones and bagels also are offered as accompaniments for coffee or the alternatives of herbal or chai tea. For those in need of a serious coffee fix, beans by the pound are available for sale.
Monday – Friday 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Cafe Siena
Only three doors down from Espresso Roma, Cafe Siena offers a slightly less extensive coffee drink offering, but makes up with its offering breakfast all day and other homemade edibles.
Specializing in food with a Latin theme, Cafe Siena entices diners with freshly prepared omelettes, soups and breakfast burritos. The food is reasonably priced and cheap breakfast specials are served daily. Though the dining area is fairly small, adequate seating is provided.
Open Monday- Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
At the EMU
The Buzz provides an ideal lunch or late night study location and tempts with comfy couches, student art and close vicinity to The Break. With a full-service espresso bar, baked goods, entrees and salads, The Buzz offers students a good variety of generic lunch items for a moderate price and is located on the ground floor of the EMU
The Greatful Bread is more geared towards the morning person, opening at 7 a.m. and serving a wide variety of baked delicacies, including some really incredible cookies. They also offer a full-service espresso bar with the same prices as The Buzz and are located in the fishbowl on the main floor of the EMU.
The Daily Grind concentrates on serving patrons of the library. Easy take-out items such as wrapped sandwiches and fruit are a convenient addition to their coffee bar.
